Ok I think I might have your answer. I have an '87 and I had what sounds to be the exact same problem. The mechanic I had to do the work told me that if you hear a loud clacking from the decompression soleniod that it is proably out of adjustment ( and he said if it is out of adjustment it will not start without a boost). Have you noticed if the headlight goes out when you r tryin to start it? If the soleniod is out of adjustment it will sometimes stay on and if the battery is dead it will always go out. I also had a short in the safety switch on the side stand, the mechanic said that it had something to with it too. He just wired around it cause he said nobody should pay $59.00 for a damn switch.
